The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a modern Buddhist tradition, based in traditional Buddhist practices and Teachings. It seeks to make the traditional teachings relevant to our modern times and conditions. The FWBO draws inspiration from the whole Buddhist tradition, through its long and varied history.
The FWBO in Stockholm was founded in 1980 by the English Order member Sona, who lived here for 8 years, on and off, and sowed many seeds that later have taken root and given fruits. We have had activities at various places in Stockholm, in a small red house in Axelsberg for a period of about 6 years in the early eighties, and since March 1990 in our present fascilities at Södermannagatan 58, at Södermalm. The Centre is situated in a basement, which is very quiet and has a beautiful atmosphere. The Centre has a bookshop, with a good variety of Buddhist books (both Swedish and English), magazines, meditation cushions and cards.
We also run our own Publishing house, Bodhi Förlaget, which has brought out small number of Dharma books in Swedish, from introductory books to books on meditation and ritual.
Since October 2006 we have our own Retreat Centre, called Dharmagiri, the hill where the Dharma is practised. It lies in beautiful landscape 150 km northwest of Stockholm, 30 km north of Sala, the nearest town.To view photos click here.
